ABOUT

Dear Reader,

This is a space where my curiosity, creativity, inspiration, daily musings and amateur attempts at writing collide to form L'ecrivain.
I am Kayley Jane, a 22 year old Creative Writing student residing in the beautiful city of Durban, South Africa.

A little about me:
I was born in South Africa, the youngest of three daughters to my amazing parents. When I was 8 years old my parents and I moved to Al Kobar, Saudi Arabia, and we came back to South Africa four years later. Since then, I have lived in Durban. I matriculated in 2012 at Danville Girls High School (yes the one with the buttercup yellow dresses and the dreaded petticoats) and got married a year later at the age of 19 to the most incredible man. After high school, I began to study Education, and as profound and significant as that role in society is, it just wasn't my future. Now, in my third year of marriage, I am studying a BA in Creative Writing (majoring in English Studies). For those of you who know me, you will know the irony of this. In school, English was my most feared subject - the one that just did not come naturally to me at all. I still remember crying at the mere mention of having to write an essay. Oh if only I knew then, what I know now. Today, thanks to my incredible husband who has made literature come alive to me, I see writing as an art form. As much as I don't know what I am doing (at all), writing stirs something so deep within me. Seeing my husband stay up till 2am most mornings because he has the strongest urge to write, has opened my eyes to the power of writing as a creative outlet, and now it is something we do together. There is nothing much like the midnight surge of curiosity, when we both sit up at night with a cup of coffee and explore and stretch our ability to creatively articulate the chaotic world within us.

Behind the title:
L'ecrivain is French for, 'the writer'. I recently spent a few days with my husband in the breathtaking city of Paris, France. The more I explored it's cobbled streets, grand old buildings and serene parks, the more I came to deeply and truly understand why creatives such as Van Gogh and Hemingway all migrated to this city in search of inspiration. Even just by breathing in the air, one cannot help but draw in life and inspiration to live, to create, to express. Thus the use of their beautiful language in the title of my creative space. The choice to use the phrase, "the writer", is a bold one on my part. In all honesty, I feel profoundly inadequate to claim such a title. This being said, for me to truly embrace this new journey, I needed to combat my fear of being wrong or not qualified enough with a courageous, bold gesture - that being the act saying out loud that I want to write, and thus I am a writer.

I do hope you enjoy fumbling through the early stages of my writing journey. I am wanting to learn and grow as much as I can, and so if you have any guidance, advice, encouragements, or constructive criticism please e-mail me at kayleyjanevn@gmail.com - I would so appreciate your feedback!

Thank you so so so much,
